PG&E Receives EEI Emergency Assistance Award for Hurricane Irma Response

01/10/2018

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) today presented Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) with the association’s “Emergency Assistance Award” for its outstanding work helping restore power in Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in September 2017.

The award is presented to EEI member companies to recognize an outstanding response in assisting other electric companies in power restoration efforts after service has been disrupted by severe weather conditions or other natural events. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process.

“When disaster impacts a region, electric companies from across the nation are called on to assist impacted companies in need – mutual assistance is a hallmark of our industry,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “When Hurricane Irma struck, PG&E answered the call to help. PG&E’s assistance to restore service to impacted customers in Florida is a terrific example of mutual assistance in action.”

“After natural disasters strike, like hurricanes and earthquakes, getting the lights turned back on is one of the most important responsibilities we have as energy companies. Being recognized by EEI and our peers for our Hurricane Irma response and restoration work is a great honor for our entire company,” said Nick Stavropoulos, President and Chief Operating Officer, PG&E. “It acknowledges the hard work, dedication and sacrifice of our teams and their families, and also demonstrates our commitment to safely restoring power to communities and supporting our mutual aid partners in other parts of the country.”

On Friday, September 8, PG&E sent a team of about 125 employees, including IBEW Local 1245 line workers, equipment operators, supervisors and support personnel to Florida ahead of the hurricane. This was in response to a mutual-aid agreement between PG&E and Florida Power & Light (FPL). A week later, PG&E and FPL expanded the mutual aid agreement to include Customer Call Center capabilities. About 30 customer service representatives in the Sacramento Call Center answered service calls for FPL to help the company effectively manage extraordinarily high call volumes. This was the first time PG&E has partnered with another energy company to provide call center support during a natural disaster.

In 2014, PG&E and FPL signed a cross-continent mutual-aid agreement, pledging assistance in the event of a catastrophic event such as a hurricane or an earthquake. This was the second time the agreement was activated with FPL, and the first time PG&E employees were deployed to assist with restoration.

The award will be presented during EEI’s Winter Board and CEO Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 10.
