PG&E Kicks off National Volunteer Month, Plans More Than 100 Employee Volunteer Projects in April

03/31/2015

Month of Service Includes Cleanups at 11 California State Parks in Honor of Earth Day

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In honor of National Volunteer Month in April, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) today kicked-off the utility’s third-annual Month of Service employee volunteer initiative. Anchored by 11 Earth Day cleanup and restoration events in partnership with the California State Parks Foundation, the company’s Month of Service program will feature more than 100 employee volunteer projects throughout Northern and Central California.

“PG&E employees have a long history of personally investing in the communities and neighborhoods where we live and work. Through our Month of Service and Earth Day volunteer events this year, we’re excited to do even more to help our communities be as vibrant as they can be,” said PG&E President Chris Johns.

This week, PG&E employees will launch the Month of Service program with events in Bakersfield, Fresno, San Francisco, San Jose, San Luis Obispo and San Rafael. Throughout the month, volunteer activities will include neighborhood emergency response training, playground builds, assistance at local food banks and building window and door framing for Habitat for Humanity homes.

PG&E is also providing a $200,000 grant to the California State Parks Foundation for the supplies and materials to complete 11 Earth Day projects throughout Northern and Central California on April 18. PG&E is providing added support for state parks by participating in two additional cleanup days for PG&E employees and their families: Friday, April 17, at Angel Island State Park and Wednesday, April 22, at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area.

“California’s state parks system has weathered budget cuts and financial ups and downs over the years, resulting in maintenance backlogs and reduced resources at many parks. The commitment of volunteers, park partners and sponsors such as PG&E are invaluable to a public state park system that has been sorely underfunded for its regular maintenance needs,” said Elizabeth Goldstein, president of California State Parks Foundation.
