Advanced technology offers state-of-the-art approach to operations and emergency response

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) today unveiled the company's state-of-the-art Gas Control Center. The new facility, which houses both gas control and dispatch in San Ramon, will serve as PG&E's around-the-clock nerve center to monitor all aspects of its natural gas system across a 70,000-square-mile service area.

Real-time information and centralized teams will allow the company to better anticipate and respond to public safety concerns and ensure system reliability.  The design of the new control center incorporates the latest technology and best-in-class emergency management and response tools.

"The new Gas Control Center is an essential part of our journey to becoming the safest, most reliable utility in the nation. The center will allow us to be more predictive and proactive when monitoring our system and it will ensure that our customers receive the reliable service they expect," said Tony Earley, PG&E Corporation chairman, CEO and president.

The $38 million center features a 90-foot-long video wall and smart boards that allow field personnel and system operators to analyze, share and assess important regional data in real time. The 24-hour operation is staffed by employees who monitor 6,750 miles of transmission pipeline and 42,000 miles of distribution pipeline.

The Control Center is also equipped with a simulation facility to ensure operators can readily address a wide range of potential emergency situations and continually hone crisis prediction and management skills.

"I applaud PG&E for setting their sights on becoming a leader on safety within the industry," said U.S. Rep. Swalwell (CA-15). "I am proud of the hardworking residents and businesses of San Ramon in my congressional district that brought this innovative control center to our area."
