31 Projects in 16 States
Receive Grants up to $5,000 Each
BETHESDA, Md. - More than
27,000 students across the country, ages 4 to 18, will soon participate
in environmental education projects -- from raising salmon in the
classroom to using data collection devices to learn more about energy.
After a competitive and thorough external review process, grants
totaling nearly $151,000 were provided by the PG&E Corporation Foundation
and PG&E National Energy Group.
The annual environmental
education grants program encourages and supports innovative projects
that educate young people about the environment. This year, 31 programs
in 16 states will receive grants of up to $5,000 each.
"Environmental stewardship
means leading by example and making innovative investments in our
future," said Robert D. Glynn, Jr., PG&E Corporation chairman, CEO
and president. "We're proud that our environmental education grants
program has grown from 19 projects in the Northeast three years
ago to now helping thousands of youngsters across the country learn
more about the environment."

Educate Youth On The Environment
Administering the program
on behalf of the PG&E Corporation Foundation and its parent, PG&E
Corporation (NYSE: PCG), PG&E National Energy Group worked with
a panel of independent judges who evaluated applications and selected
recipients. About 270 grant applications were received from elementary,
middle and high schools, non-profit organizations and community
groups engaged in educational projects related to conservation and
the environment.
Judges were Jim De Lorbe,
director of development for the Smithsonian Environmental Research
Center; Bill Harwood, CBS News space consultant and aerospace writer
for The Washington Post; Mary Spruill, program director for the
National Energy Education Development Project; and, Julia Washburn,
director of grants and programs for the National Park Foundation.
Criteria considered in the review process included environmental
benefits, educational value, the scientific component, the interactive
nature and the legacy for future learning.
