02/22/2018

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) was named as one of the best places to work in the U.S. by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest national civil rights organization working to achieve workplace equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans. For the 15th consecutive year, the company received a perfect 100 percent rating on the HRC’s annual Corporate Equality Index (CEI) for its consistently strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“We are proud to continue to receive this recognition from the Human Rights Campaign. It affirms our commitment to diversity and inclusion, which is one of our core values. When we are able to be who we are and feel included, our full potential is unleashed,” said PG&E Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Diversity Officer Dinyar Mistry.

In compiling the CEI report, the HRC invited the 2016 Fortune 1000 and the 2016 AmLaw 200 (American Lawyer magazine’s top 200 revenue-grossing law firms) to participate in the survey. PG&E was one of a record 609 businesses that earned a perfect score.

PG&E’s perfect scores were based on detailed criteria, including the following five categories:

  • non-discrimination policies
  • employment benefits
  • demonstrated organizational competency and accountability around LGBT diversity and inclusion
  • public commitment to LGBT equality
  • responsible citizenship.

PG&E has been one of the leading corporate voices in the LGBT community for many years. Examples of the company’s support over the years include:

  • being the first corporate sponsor and participant in the San Francisco Pride Parade (1986)
  • having one of the oldest LGBT employee resource groups (PrideNetwork) in the nation
  • being the first utility to actively recruit LGBT-owned enterprises in its supplier diversity program
  • creating internal and external awareness about LGBT rights and issues
  • being the first major company in California to support the “No on 8” (banning same-sex marriage) ballot measure.

“Hundreds of top American companies are driving progress toward equality in the workplace,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “In addition, many of these companies have also become vocal advocates for equality in the public square. We’re proud to have developed so many strong partnerships with corporate allies who see LGBTQ equality as a crucial issue for our country and for their businesses.”

The HRC is just one of many organizations which have recognized PG&E for its commitment to diversity and inclusion. In 2016, PG&E was named Corporation of the Year by the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. And DiversityInc, one of the nation’s leading publications on diversity and business, ranked PG&E as one of the top utilities in the nation for diversity.

Information on PG&E’s diversity and inclusion efforts is available on the company website. The HRC’s CEI report provides a detailed analysis and rating of large U.S. employers and their policies and practices regarding LGBT employees. The report also serves as the national benchmarking tool on corporate policies and practices for LGBT employees.
