PG&E Recognized as One of America’s 50 Most Community-Minded Companies

06/28/2016

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) was named one of America’s 50 most community-minded companies by the National Conference on Citizenship’s annual Civic 50 list. The list identifies the top 50 S&P 500 corporations in the U.S. in terms of time, talent and resources used to improve the quality of life in their communities. This is the fourth year that PG&E has been recognized as a leader in civic engagement.

“PG&E is a company of people who love to serve—not just in terms of the gas and electricity we deliver to our customers but also through community giving and volunteerism. The Civic 50 recognition speaks to the incredible generosity of our employees and the work we do together to make our communities better, as well as our determination to tap into California’s extraordinary diversity by creating economic opportunities with diverse suppliers,” said Travis Kiyota, vice president, Community Relations and Public Affairs for PG&E.

In 2015, the company’s philanthropic and civic efforts included:

  • Donations of more than $7.9 million from employees and retirees through PG&E’s annual workplace giving program, Campaign for the Community.
  • Grants of $25 million to more than 1,300 charitable organizations throughout its 70,000-square-mile service area.
  • More than 87,000 volunteer hours from employees to improve their communities.
  • Spending a record $2.5 billion in 2015 with diverse suppliers, accounting for 44 percent of its total procurement.

This year’s Civic 50 applicants were evaluated on several measures, including the quantity and impact of financial and human resources applied to civic improvement; whether internal and external resources are activated to maximize community impact; how a company’s community engagement activities support its business interests; how broadly community engagement is supported and institutionalized within a company’s policies, systems and incentives; and how a company measures the social and business value of its community engagement programs.

About the Civic 50 Survey

The Civic 50 survey was developed in partnership with a high-profile working group of researchers and industry thought leaders. Dozens of corporate advisers provided strategic guidance on the program’s objectives, including defining indicators, developing methodology, and identifying partners and participants. As a result of this collaborative process, the initiative reflects leading insight and thinking about how corporations can and should connect with communities in a 21st century economy.

The survey was administered by True Impact, a company specializing in helping organizations maximize and measure their social and business value. The survey instrument consists of quantitative and multiple-choice questions that inform the Civic 50 scoring process. The Civic 50 is the only survey and ranking system that exclusively measures corporate involvement in communities.
